When buying wine in Chicago meant picking between a jug of “Burgundy” or “Chablis” at the local liquor store, Sam’s was offering rare gems from France, Germany, Italy and other locales in our now legendary basement at our old store on North Ave. One of the only fine wine merchants in the United States and certainly the Midwest! Decades later we were one of the pioneering retailers on the internet. Well not ones to stand still we have decided to start the next new adventure.
Traditionally wine merchants in the U.S. decide what to sell based on what their local wholesalers carry. Over the years this has allowed us retailers to have a wide variety of wines from all over the globe. Our wholesalers have been a big part of our success and will always be important to us. But with so much innovation and new exciting wineries popping up all over the planet, there is only so much the traditional importer/wholesaler can bring in. We can’t help but feel as though we have been missing out on some fantastic wines. So we have decided to do some of our own legwork and do a little exploring of our own. Recent trips overseas have yielded some real treasures! Not only are these cutting-edge, outstanding wines, but because we are doing the work we are able to sell these wines at MUCH LOWER PRICES than comparable wines in the marketplace. You will see these wines in our stores and on our website labeled as “Vineyard Direct.” Some of these wines have already scored big with the critics, earning reviews of 90+ from the wine publications.
